TRANSFOND Joins EMPSA Through RoPay, Strengthening European Mobile Payments Interoperability
TRANSFOND has officially joined the European Mobile Payment Systems Association (EMPSA) through its Romanian mobile instant payment solution, RoPay, marking another step toward enhanced cross-border payment interoperability across Europe.
Through this partnership, TRANSFOND and EMPSA aim to strengthen Europe’s payment landscape, fostering a connected, resilient, and digitally driven continent. EMPSA now unites 12 national mobile payment systems with the shared mission of fostering a borderless, innovative, and secure European payments ecosystem.
TRANSFOND’s membership reinforces the association’s goal to accelerate collaboration and technological, legal and commercial alignment among Europe’s leading mobile payment providers. “For TRANSFOND, joining EMPSA represents a strategic milestone in our commitment to contributing to a borderless Europe where citizens can access fast, secure, and convenient payments anywhere on the continent,” said Sabin Carantina, General Manager at TRANSFOND.
RoPay: Romania’s Mobile Instant Payment Solution
Developed by TRANSFOND, RoPay is a mobile instant payment initiation service enabling direct account-to-account (A2A) transfers in both P2P and P2M spaces, eCommerce included. The solution supports multiple technologies, including QR code scanning, deep links, NFC, and mobile number proxies, allowing participating banks, other PSPs and merchants to deploy diverse payment experiences tailored to their strategies.
Users access RoPay through participating banks’ mobile applications, benefiting from a seamless, everyday payment experience without the need to share bank account details.
Strengthening a Pan-European Payment Network
EMPSA consists of 12 national mobile payment systems, representing more than 100 million users, millions of merchant acceptance points, and billions of transactions each year. TRANSFOND’s joining ensures that Romania plays an active role in shaping the future of European payments and contributes its expertise in instant payment infrastructure to the broader European community.
Teresa Mesquita, Chairperson of EMPSA, added: “Together with all EMPSA partners, we continue the development of shared European frameworks for mobile and cross-border payments, helping advance technological standardisation and strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty and financial resilience.”
